This famous actress can actually be found on some 100 sek bills (sek is the abbreviation of Swedish currency).

Greta Garbo was a Swedish actress who became an icon of the silver screen during Hollywood's Golden Age. Born Greta Lovisa Gustafsson on September 18, 1905, in Stockholm, Sweden, Garbo was the youngest of three children. Her father was a laborer, and her mother worked as a maid. As a child, Garbo was shy and introverted. She enjoyed reading books and spent much of her time alone. However, she had a talent for performing and was encouraged by her mother to take acting lessons. At the age of 14, Garbo began studying at the Royal Dramatic Theatre School in Stockholm.

In 1922, Garbo made her film debut in the Swedish film "The Saga of Gösta Berling." She quickly gained attention for her talent and beauty and was soon signed to a contract with MGM Studios in Hollywood. Garbo made her American film debut in the 1926 silent film "The Torrent." Garbo quickly became a sensation in Hollywood, and she went on to star in some of the most iconic films of the era, including "Anna Christie" (1930), "Grand Hotel" (1932), "Queen Christina" (1933), "Anna Karenina" (1935), and "Camille" (1936). Garbo was known for her striking beauty, her smoky voice, and her dramatic acting style.

Garbo's career spanned over two decades, and she was one of the highest-paid actresses of her time. She was nominated for three Academy Awards for Best Actress, but she never won. Garbo was known for her reclusive nature and her aversion to publicity. She rarely gave interviews and was often photographed in public wearing large sunglasses and a scarf to conceal her face. Garbo's mystique only added to her allure, and she became a symbol of glamour and sophistication.

Garbo's personal life was also the subject of much speculation. She was linked to several high-profile men throughout her career, including John Gilbert, a fellow MGM star who she appeared with in several films. Garbo was also rumored to have had affairs with director George Cukor and actor Marlene Dietrich. Despite her many admirers, Garbo remained fiercely independent and never married. She once famously said, "I never said, 'I want to be alone.' I only said, 'I want to be left alone.' There is all the difference."

After her retirement from acting, Garbo lived a quiet life in New York City. She continued to receive offers to return to the screen but turned them all down. Garbo spent much of her time reading and collecting art, and she remained elusive to the public until her death in 1990.

Garbo's legacy has endured long after her death, and she is still considered one of the greatest actresses of all time. Her performances in films like "Anna Karenina" and "Camille" are still revered by film lovers today, and her image has been immortalized in countless books, films, and songs. Garbo's impact on the film industry cannot be overstated. She helped to redefine the role of women in film, and she paved the way for future actresses to demand more complex and nuanced roles. Garbo's legacy is a testament to her talent and her enduring appeal. She will always be remembered as one of Hollywood's most enigmatic and captivating stars.
